Upgrading the Tern Link D8 Drivetrain (Part 2)

Continuing the upgrade of my Tern Link D8 drivetrain...

Sorry for the blurry pics. I had to do this late at night and low light pics are not that good.

After cleaning and removing the stock parts, we proceed with installing the new components.
  1. Install the SLX Cassette
  2. removing the stock cassette and the "dork disk"
    • Put a little grease on the free hub body. I like to put grease where there are metal to metal contact to avoid metal seizing and also to protect the metal parts.
    • Slide in the cassette(cogs). Make sure to align the cogs properly.
    • Lock the cassette in place with the lock ring included in the cassette. Use the lock ring tool and wrench to tighten it. No need for the chain tool since the direction of tightening the lock ring is opposite the freewheel direction. I don't have a torque wrench so I tighten the lock until a couple of clicks is heard.
      new XT cogs installed.
  3. Install the XT shifter and lock on grips.
  4. I-spec shifters + brake lever
    • Install the I-spec shifter to the right Deore brake lever. Put it on the right side of the handle bar. Install the right brake lever.
    • Insert the grips and position it right on the handle bar. Tighten the bolts to hold it in place.
T-one grips with bar-end + brake and shifter installed
    • Adjust the brake lever into proper position and lock into place.
    • Adjust the shifter position so that you can easily reach the levers with your thumb. Tighten the locking bolt.
    • Insert the shifter cable into the cable housing and pull it out on the rear wheel side.
  5. Install the rear mech (rear derailleur)
    tern dropout adapter
    • Install the rear mech adapter.
    • Install the Shimano Zee rear mech on the adapter. Ensure that the B-tension screw is resting on the dropout. Lock it into position by tightening the mounting bolt.
    • Put the shifter into the top gear position. Do this by pulling the shift release lever until it does not click anymore.
    • adapter + zee rear mech
    • Pull the shifter cable into the cable mount in the rear mech and secure it in place.
  6. Install the chain
  7. Chain installed with 6 extra links for future 56T crank upgrade.
    • Cut the chain to proper length. The recommended chain length is determined by wrapping it around the biggest chain ring and the biggest cog then add 2 links to the chain. Use the chain tool to remove excess chain.
    • Route the chain properly through the chain ring, chain guide, cogs, and the rear mech pulleys.
    • Use the missing link to join the chain. I use a makeshift tool to hold the chain while I lock it.
  8. Tune the rear mech
    • Shift the mech to smallest gear. Make sure to leave the barrel adjuster room to move.
    • Turn the High Limit Screw until the pulley is aligned to the smallest cog.
    • Adjust the barrel adjuster to remove cable slack.
    • Shift to the largest cog.
    • Adjust the Low Limit Screw to align the pulley to the largest cog.
    • Adjust the B-Tension screw so that the largest cog is as close to the pulley as possible without touching.
    • Shift to the smallest gear and do some upshifts. Use the barrel adjuster to fine tune the shifting.
I will have to take this to a Tagaytay ride to test out if I can keep up with my MTB buddies.
